Coassement de la Grenouille

Journal of the Milice de Ste. Famille

Volume 15, No. 4, August 2003

Bon jour mon amis

I have been surfing the net and found a couple of interesting items.  First,  Sameul Pepys diary.  Pepys lived in London in the mid 1600¹s.  His diary is one of the finest examples of everyday life to be found.  It is available in the internet at :
http://www.pepysdiary.com/  It is posted day by day.  So if you check it on Aug 14th you can read what happened on Aug 14, 1660.  Quite interesting.

For the past three years, after June fort, Carol Wonderlick has been hosting a “so you want to be a reenactor” seminar at the Cahokia Courthouse.  She has a web site under construction at
http://blh.homestead.com/home.html .  There is a picture of Lyle Cubberly and me cowering behind a tree at a Fort Massac tactical of the first page.  Check it out.

Biff, Fritz Glock, Ray Naughton, Gary Driver, Susan Kirk, and Jean Driver  have put together a workshop for the Sept Meeting.  I hope to see a good turn out.

Some fine events coming up.  Sept 6-7  - Grande Fete du Chez Les Canses at Hodge Park, Mo.,  For more info contact Mike Keeny  (MKeeny@msn.com )  I will be there.    That is the reason for the date change for September meeting.  I have directions if anyone else is interested.

Sept 20-21 - Lewis and Clark encampment at Belle Fontaine

2004 is looking to be a very busy year.  I have already submitted the Milice¹s name to participate in the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Great Meadows.  I hope we can have a good turn out to beat Col. Washington again.

As usual, my pen is running dry.  Keep safe.  I hope to see you soon

We have a video tape of a very basic 1755 drill.  Thanks to Lyle, Tom, Larry, Dennis and Brian for their help.  If anyone is interested in a copy, let me know.  I am not going to charge for these, but donations for postage, etc., will not be turned down. - John

NOTICE     NOTICE    NOTICE

The Milice meeting scheduled for September 6 has been changed to Saturday September 13 at 10 a.m.

To: John Mefford le Captain de Milice de Saint Famille

Milice committee for meeting programs

At a previous meeting a committee of volunteers was loosely appointed to respond to the issue of providing a program for meetings of the Famille

The following met on august 13, 2003

Biff, Fritz Glock, Ray Naughton, Gary Driver, Susan Kirk, Jean Driver

There was considerable discussion about possible programs, which might prepare novices for participation in shooting events like woods walks, or developing a persona male and female

A list of topics including crafts skills for developing accouterments for attire of the ladies and gentlemen of 1754 Šshooting both men and women, clothing, food, lodging, making paper, furnitureŠ.and many other things.

We would like also to suggest that a shoot at frog talk or other meeting might include a mixed shoot male/female team where one loads and the other shoots and vice versa  a time eventŠfor big prizes or not so big prizesŠ

After much more discussion we thought that in preparation for future events we would put on a workshop (this means participants are involved) at the September meeting on making of cartridge booth blank and ball and powder. This might include making balls 62 and 69cal, rolling cartridges and boxing for carrying in woods. We will try to do period correct method that some one could use in camp as a demonstration and a do at home method.
We will provide lead, paper and perhaps TOM could provide powder from Milice supply. Gary has volunteered to sweeten the pot by providing coffee and cobbler.

We should include this information in newsletter and perhaps an e-mail to members inviting them to meeting.

This committee will report at that meeting and solicited additional topics and demonstrator of stuffŠ

Submitted on behalf of the committee by the non-scribe

Fritz Glock
